Malik Willis Struggles as Dolphins Fall to 0-5 in October

The Miami Dolphins continue their struggle in the 2026 NFL season, falling to a disappointing 0-5 record. The latest setback came against the Cincinnati Bengals with a close 31-24 loss. Despite a strong effort to bridge an 18-point fourth-quarter deficit, the Dolphins were unable to recover an onside kick to maintain their momentum. Quarterback Malik Willis had a mixed performance, throwing for 137 yards and a touchdown and rushing for a season-high 74 yards and another score. However, his two interceptions and a fumble contributed to 10 Bengals points directly from turnovers. Willis voiced his frustration over the team’s offensive mistakes and underlined the need for accountability rather than excuses based on youth.

Rookie participation was notable in Sunday’s game, with 10 first-year players logging 455 snaps collectively. However, rookies Caleb Douglas, Kyle Louis, and Trey Moore were sidelined due to health reasons. Coach Jeff Hafley positioned the team’s heavy reliance on rookies as turning advantageous with each game, looking to shed their ‘training wheels.’ Hafley also emphasized his expectation of consistency and improved execution from his players.

As the team approaches a Week 6 bye, their focus will be on correcting early mistakes and enhancing their play in crucial moments. The Dolphins are determined to boost their performance when they meet the New York Jets in Week 7, arguably one of the more favorable matches left this season as per some analyses. Regardless of the current record, Hafley remains optimistic about player morale and the team’s evolving identity, centered around physicality and persistent effort.
